Another one to watch fresh out of college is Chloe Smith, with her very cool final show of mystical creatures and houndstooth....
What do you love about designing?
I enjoy seeing what I have sketched brought
to life and become something wearable. It's the whole process from start to
finish really, the creativity and freedom to make anything I want! It's such a
great feeling when someone asks where your clothes are from and the answer is
'I made it'. I'm really looking forward to seeing people on the street wearing
my designs in the future.
What is your final collection about and
what techniques did you use?
My final collection
'(Un)traditional' is inspired by quintessentially British
traditions. A contemporary and playful interpretation of British heritage and
the traditional country lifestyle, which is translated into a modern, tailored
womenswear collection. Through the use of techniques such as laser
cutting, patchwork and appliqué dogtooth is transformed into
innovative yet refined textiles which create a carefully considered clash
of tradition and modernity. (Un)traditional’s aesthetic is fresh, modern
and pushes the boundaries of the traditions it references
What designers inspire you?
Every designer is an inspiration! My
favourite designer is Ralph Lauren, I love everything about the brand.
British heritage brands such as Burberry and Mulberry have also been
a major source of inspiration for my final collection, I favour garments that
are classical and have stood the test of time.
What's next and are you starting up your
own brand?
One day I would love to have my own label
but right now I want to focus on gaining experience within the fashion industry
by working for an established design house as an assistant or junior designer
either for a the high-street or high-end brand.
How do you feel
about the current world of fast fashion?
I actually wrote
my dissertation on the sustainable future of
the fashion industry! I really do think the industry needs to change
and personally I do not support fast fashion, I would rather invest
in an item that is going to last a long time, many classical pieces look better
with age!
Five items you can't live
without?
Passport, a pencil and
sketchbook, iPhone, my Fiat 500 and my onesie!
