Stalked: Ludovica Gioscia, Artist

25 June 2015

Ludovica is a very talented conceptual artist, whom I met at a private view of Jesse Darling (also a previous stalk). She is fascinated by the psychological mechanisms that underpin marketing strategies and our relationship with consumption. In particular in accumulation and destruction, and she often portrays this cycle in her artworks.

Why did you decide to become an artist and what do you love about it?

The only thing I was good at in primary school was making pasta collages and little balls of compressed paper...That is exactly what I am still doing today! The thing that I still deeply love about being an artist is the making of the work, getting my hands dirty with blobs of paint and the sense of fascination that hits me when materials behave unexpectedly.

What inspires you?

Colours, texture, scent and impossible combinations.

What is your latest work about?

In a few weeks Jebila Okongwu and myself will be showing together at Galleria Riccardo Crespi in Milan, where we will activate our collections. I am devising new wallpaper patterns for this show in which old and new archives will be deployed and Jebila is making new oversized bananas made out of cardboard boxes he collects.

Who are your fellow artists to watch right now?

Sarah Baker and Jebila Okongwu.

How would you describe your personal style?

Patterned and relaxed.

Where do you shop and eat in London?

Goppa on the Homerton High Street has the best pizza in Hackney so I often go there. Another local place I love both for the food and its warm atmosphere is Little Ivy’s on the Lower Clapton Road. I don’t have a fixed place where I buy my clothes. Friends tend to give me clothes and I sometimes pick up the odd thing at markets and second hand stores….

Five items you can't live without?

My little Galliano winter leopard print puffer, an eighties Moschino floral blazer that I’ve inherited from my mum with big golden buttons onto which the words ‘Dov’e’ Zaza?’ (‘Where’s Zaza?’) are engraved, comfy trainers, coffee and sunshine.
