Camilla Elphick is one of those shining stars who created a whirlwind of excitement with her debut collection last season, there is no doubt that we have the next big thing in the midst. Her graduate shoe collection, “So Bad,
It’s Good”, gained widespread press coverage with the "Pez" shoe. She
then launched her own shoe brand, with shoes hand-made in Italy starting with
her collection for SS15, "You got the Luck". This season the theme of
the AW15 collection is the "Puuurfect Storm" which features a range
of feminine mid heel and high heel pumps, modern flats and boots all with a
playful twist and the feature of any outfit.
I caught up with her after London Fashion Week, in which she exhibited this simply divine collection.
How did you get to
where you are now?
When I left school I moved to New York to study
at Parsons, The New School for Design. With a serious passion for shoes I then
studied footwear design at Cordwainer at the London College of Fashion. During
my studies I interned and worked for shoe designers including Nicholas
Kirkwood, Sophia Webster, Donna Karan, Paul Andrew and Charlotte Olympia. After
showing my graduate collection I was encouraged to start up the Camilla Elphick
shoe brand.
What are your main
inspirations for your latest collection?
The theme for the AW15 shoe collection is the
"Puuurfect Storm" taking inspiration from the ever-deliberated
British weather. There are lots of boots this season - my favourite is the
"Silver Lining", a classic boot only it's silver with golden arrows
at the back.
London fashion week
has just finished, what did you think of it and how is the bfc supporting young
designers like yourself?
The BFC has been incredibly supportive. Caroline
Rush is so inspiring and her team is phenomenal. London really becoming The
Fashion city with so many talented British designers. I am so pleased I was
able to show the collection at Somerset House, I felt quite proud to be
British!
What was the best part
of LFW?
The best part for me is "style street
stalking" at Somerset House over LFW. The outfits are insane! Some are a
little crazy, but mainly good crazy!
If you could live in
another city where would it be and why?
I think I would move back to New York. It is my
second home and I really miss my friends there. Ideally one day I would like to
split my time between London and New York. One day!
Five items you can't
live without?
Shoes!!!, IPhone, Pack
of Nuts, Jo Malone 'Oud & Bergamot' perfume, My "Camilla"
necklace my mum gave me.
