I discovered Awsa recently on Instagram of all place (that's the power of social media kiddies)! her incredible cool urban style caught my eye and then that voice well and truly entranced me from then on!! Awsa, is a singer and songwriter, stalk her latest stuff here. Over cocktails at Meat Liquor I picked her brains on her music and style....
What do you do and why do you love your
job?
I am a singer, songwriter and a backing
vocalist.
Variety, demanding and fun. It is also
what I have always wanted to do and get better at. Plus I get to wear whatever
I want to whenever I want to because I am an “artist”. Right?
What does singing mean to you?
A challenge, a release and no bullshit.
What's been the best moment so far in
your career?
Belting out behind Stevie Wonder on the
Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury was pretty cool, as was touring with Nick Cave.
But a great moment, however odd it may sound, was when my microphone didn't
work in front of 600 people in Koko. I was on a cat walk 7 metres from stage
where the band was so there was no way I could turn my back on the audience to
get a working mic. Fortunately I was doing Madonna's Like A Prayer (a song most
people know) so I made the audience sing to me rather than me to them and once
I was handed a new mic we continued the song as a duet until the end. Awesome
connection and collaborative work.
What music do you listen to?
I will listen to everything once and
consider myself to be quite eclectic in my music taste. But I guess artist and
albums I always return to are Lykke Li, Goldfrapp, Robyn, Eurythmics and John
Mayer; LOVE Gravity. Current mild obsession is Clean Bandit for how they let
their string instruments carry the hooks and melodies and Bastille whom I had
the pleasure of backing the other day. Oh and Rudimental. I have a love affair
with their songs.
How would you describe your personal
style?
A great friend ,clothes and stage wear designer Josephine Sundt, once
summed me up as “sporty chique couture.” I can live with that. Practical, fun
and sexy with hints of classic and clean. What codswallop!
Where do you shop?
Fashion actually
stresses me out and brands can be restrictive. Nothing annoys me more than
picking up a magazine in February/March and being flung into June and beaches.
I struggle being present enough as it is and loosing 3 months in marketing
forces really gets my back up. Also I can never reeeaallly find what I am
looking for, just like U2 (geddit?), so as soon as my wallet allows I will be
making as much of the clothes as I can myself together with a designer and
dress maker. One of my favourite dresses is a collaboration of that kind made
with Valentino material and an idea I had. But to actually answer your question
I guess a mixture of Top Shop, Reiss, H&M, various London markets and self
made tweaks to most things.
Five items you can't live without?
A hoodie, low cut, tight jeans, a sexy
pair of heels, a good pair of soft, flat trainers and my heart jewellery.
STALK THE STALKER ON
Give items I couldn't live without are: deep dark blue skinny jeans, a white v-neck, black heels, pink lip gloss, and my Steve Madden bag.
